Title of session:

Email exchange: Native speakers and entry-level ESOL students

Description:

Refugees and economic migrant English Language students at Unitec have expressed the desire for more interaction with 'real Kiwis'. For beginners, face to face interaction is often daunting. Email is being used as a means of providing that interaction in a 'safe' environment where they can think about the language they are going to use. The students have been paired with native speakers and are undertaking a number of tasks via email.

The content of the email exchanges is also being examined for evidence of language learning. In future, the data collated will be compared to that gathered from a similar email exchange with non-native speakers.

The presentation aims to provide insight into setting up email exchanges for language learning, supporting non-computer literate students to use email, and issues surrounding native versus non-native speaker email exchanges.
