International research tells us that successful
eLearning is supported by facilitation. The research is, however,
largely classroom based and offers little guidance to workplaces
wanting to access eLearning technology consistent with their modern
computerised environments.
New Zealand workplace learning is, for the most part, competency
based. This session takes as its subject a recent government-funded
project to develop a self-contained programme to train workplace
participants as eLearning facilitators. The programme is structured
on the scenario-based learning model and utilises a web based asynchronous
discussion forum to develop understanding and guide workplace practice.
The session discusses the key international research that informed
the project, the industry-endorsed competencies for a successful
e-facilitator, the problems encountered, and focuses on findings
arising out of the nation-wide pilot demonstrating a shift in the
traditional educational paradigm.
