Title of session:

Setting up for a successful learning community: key considerations

Description:

Based on experiences in three New Zealand based learning communities, Derek will present some guidelines to give us at least a fighting chance of growing community. The presentation is based on the premise that learning in community is good, if not essential in some areas of learning, and that we have now moved a little beyond the beginnings: after 2 decades of observation and research some of the basics are becoming clearer. As well, tools have become more learner centred, learning environments more powerful and social networks more important. Given this, what are some basic good practices?

Biography:

His current interest is communities of practice in short courses and tools to support social interaction. He is a member of the Interact development team, and has a website at lits.gen.nz.
