Title of session:

FPS Assessor-a Flash game for test preparation

Description:

This session looks at the design, development and user testing of FPS Assessor, a first person shooter assessment preparation tool. The purpose is to engage students sufficiently to encourage preparation for tests. This personal project of the author was triggered by comments made by keynote speaker Marc Prensky at E-Fest 2004. Created in Macromedia Flash and XML the student shoots at planes or cyborgs colour-coded to the four distractors of a multichoice test. The application tracks the students score, and at the end presents a list of those questions the student got wrong, providing a useful guide to further study. The tutor edits the XML file with questions, answers and distractors. The student is put under intense pressure by the game and needs energy, focus and a thorough knowledge of the subject material in order to obtain a satisfactory result.

User testing with students will also be discussed.
