Making metadata matter

Description:

Recent initiatives involving the development of digital repositories for the storage and access of resources and learning objects have highlighted the role and importance of metadata. The presentation describes some of the findings of an investigation into metadata used for repositories. This presentation will give a basic understanding of metadata and its importance for successful retrieval, looking briefly at the main standards and schemes in current use, and the need for quality assurance. A collaborative approach between library, technical and teaching staff may be a solution to the creation of quality metadata.

Biography:

Carolyn works in the Wintec Library where a large part of her job involves meeting the study and research needs of distance students. It was this, combined with an interest in new experiences and directions that led her, upon request, to accept the challenge of investigating metadata for digital repositories and offering a library perspective to support the work being done by the Centre for Learning Technologies
