Experiences and challenges of assessing online

Description:

This session will discuss the experiences and challenges of providing online assessment to a large class of distance education students and internal students. It will look at the strengths and weaknesses of online mastery quizzes from both a student and lecturer point of view. It will show examples of using different techniques to limit academic dishonesty and improve the reusability of the questions, along with the use of multimedia content to enhance quizzes. Problems regarding the use of randomly selected questions to develop quizzes will also be addressed, along with suggested guidelines to avoid problems related to these types of quizzes. The presentation will outline some do's and don'ts of online assessment gained from bitter experience over a number of years.

Biography:

Whilst completing a Masters degree in Marketing, Alan Smee accepted the role of Computer Consultant for the Department of Finance, Banking and Property. The focus of his role was primarily to develop the Department's online learning resources. Alan is currently responsible for the Department's 63 WebCT sites covering both undergraduate and post-graduate courses, which range in class size from 10 to over 900 students. In addition to founding these online courses he has been involved in the development of several multimedia CD-roms and has been the recipient of a number of grants for further enhancement in this area. Alan is also currently a member of the Massey University group working on the NZ Open Source VLE project.
