Title of session: Overview of the New Zealand Education Sector (e)Learning Strategic Framework and Implementation of the Interim Tertiary (e)Learning Framework

In this session Derek and others from the Tertiary (e)Learning team will present an overview of the MoE’s New Zealand Education Sector (e)Learning Strategic Framework, and how this relates to the Interim Tertiary (e)Learning Framework. The team will provide an overview of the consultation process that is currently being undertaken, and share aspects of the implementation plan for the Interim Tertiary (e)Learning Framework, including the (e)learning effective practice guidelines that are being produced to help guide initiatives within the sector.

Biography: Derek is currently working with the Ministry of Education as a senior analyst in (e)learning. He is contributing to the development of a national (e)learning framework, an implementation plan for the Interim Tertiary (e)Learning Framework, and effective practice guidelines for (e)learning.

Derek’s experience in flexible and distance learning has included his role as manager of the eSection at The Correspondence School (http://www.correspondence.school.nz/) in Wellington, where he led the development of (e)learning initiatives such as a transition from traditional print-based delivery to (e)learning. He has a broad background in education, with experience at the primary and secondary school level, and as a lecturer in educational technology at the Christchurch College of Education. There he established the Primary Open Learning Option (POLO) (http://www.cce.ac.nz/text/spte/polo.html). Derek has worked extensively in the area of teacher education and professional development, and is particularly interested in what is required for teachers to work effectively in these new environments. In 2004 he coordinated the T4T4T (http://t4t4t.interact.ac.nz) project, an online professional learning community for tertiary teachers. Derek currently also works as the Director of eLearning at CORE Education Ltd, which is based in Christchurch.
