Title of session:

Utilising SMS mobile technology for m-Support of nursing students in clinical placements

Category:

Paper

Description:

This session will describe the research findings of a pilot project offering M-Support to nursing students in clinical placements. M-Support is provided through SMS to motivate, support and communicate with student nurses placed in a range of primary health care placements across Northland. ETXT internet facilities support the nursing lecturer to utilize this mobile technology by allowing SMS communication from a personal computer to a student’s mobile phone in addition to that from the nursing lecturer’s mobile phone. The topic of most relevance to my presentation at eFest is that of ‘Moving Technology’. SMS incorporating eTXT involves innovative integration of private and public technology in the public domain of education. It has enabled evolution of the learning environment by adding another dimension, i.e. M-Support of students. This project also has implications for the theme ‘Moving learners and educational design’ in that it is one practical example demonstrating the incorporation of mobile technology into learning and teaching practice.  This project commenced in March 2006 and will continue to November 2006. Findings of the research to date will be presented, demonstrating the extent to which the aims of the project were met and providing practical details about the project.
