e-Kaika: Maori language revitalization

This paper is based on the four years managing the Ngai Tahu e-Learning environment.  Topics will include:  wide spread use of technologies from print outs to cell phone technology to attract and retain Māori language learners of all ages and levels; technology barriers for Māori language and how to get around them; cultural barriers and suggested solutions; lessons learnt and what we would do differently. 

Biography:

Karaitiana Taiuru managed the Māori Language e-Learning strategy for Te Rūnanga o Ngai Tahu for the past 4 years creating the learning portal to assist the revitalisation of Kai Tahu’s unique dialect for the 4,000 members who wanted to learn to speak Māori and Kai Tahu dialect. The e-Learning portal gained much national and international recognition and was finalist in several awards including the international Stockholm Awards. Karaitiana Taiuru is an Internet technologist and has made significant changes in the Internet to support Māori Language including the creation of Māori.nz and highlighting macron issues within the electronic environment.
