Communities of Practice 2.0: now we have Web 2.0 tools, what has changed for distributed communities of practice?

Presenter: Derek Chirnside
Role:

Educational Designer

Organisation:

University Centre for Teaching and Learning, University of Canterbury

Category:

Workshop

Description:

This session will assume a little familiarity with the concept of "Communities of Practice" (but not a lot) especially distributed communities where online support is vital.    We have an increasing understanding of community nurture, but in an era of new tools such as blogs and social network software the landscape is changing.    This workshop will consider several case studies, and some insights from some web 2.0 enhanced communities.  The link between community roles/functions and online tools will be explored.  Other questions could include: managing identity in a fragmented world, leadership and facilitation roles in community, emergent leadership, managing boundaries and newcomers.    Participants will have an opportunity to compare and contrast lessons learned from several communities, and will be welcome to bring examples and questions from their own experience.

Biography:

Derek has recently moved from the Christchurch College of Education to UCTL (the University Centre for Teaching and Learning) at the University of Canterbury where he works as an Educational Designer.  He is an intermittent blogger, and is a member of several online communities of various hues.  His interests include tools, strategies and practices to nurture learning communities in formal taught courses.  But as well he is interested in the formal or emergent roles that help nurture (or otherwise) Communities of Practice.  His home page is http://lits.gen.nz
