Idealising distance learners: Who are we really teaching?

Presenters: Richard Drummond, Judy Pickering and Paul Wightman
Role:

Instructional Design Team

Organisation:

The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand

Category:

Conversation

Description:

Writing to “real” students increases relevance of materials and personalises the “voice” that students “hear”. As data builds about engaging distance students - elearning and print-based - we still have little knowledge of the students themselves. This conversation focuses on developing persona for realistic students we can design materials and feedback for.

Biography:

Responsible for print, blended and e-learning materials development from unit standards to degrees, the Instructional Design team at The Open Polytechnic includes:
Richard Drummond - In real life, sits under a small mountain in the Wairarapa, growing pumpkins and potatoes and tending sheep. Richard has worked as an ID for 20 years so far to fund this lifestyle and prefers a holistic learning approach.
Judy Pickering - An internationally competitive  waka ama paddler,  Judy is a regular runner, works out at the gym, can't grow old gracefully  and obsesses about E-Learning
Paul Wightman - Enjoys the challenge of running a 50 year old Land Rover and knows a good diagram is worth a thousand words. Focusing on practical training designs, Paul prefers his learning materials to show logic and structure.
