Description:

Clare and Aaron, otherwise known in Second Life as Arwenna Stardust and Isa Goodman, have yet to meet outside of this multi-user virtual environment (MUVE).  Brought together in December 2006 by a posting on Aaron’s Eduforge project site, NZ Education in a Virtual World, they have both pursued different but related explorations of the educational possibilities offered by the rich Second Life environment.

In this presentation they will offer a glimpse of their Second Life world, the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful, and provide an overview of some of the exciting educational initiatives currently underway there.  These extend from ongoing development projects such as Sloodle (a Moodle/Second Life mashup), through the construction of shared learning spaces, to research about and within Second Life itself.

Their objective is to encourage discussion on how to create real education in a MUVE and to seek comment and support on the collaborative creation of a Second Life campus for New Zealanders to share.
Biographies:

Clare’s teaching has ranged from History at secondary level to Information Systems at Massey University and seems now to have settled down as Information Technology at NMIT.  Initially a somewhat reluctant e-educator, she was immediately excited by the potential offered by virtual immersive worlds.  Current chair of the ITPNZ Research Forum, Clare also sells galaxy fountains in Second Life and beaded jewellery in Nelson Market.

Aaron’s background in education extends from the teaching of horticulture to computer graphics.  First introduced to formal online education in 2000 as a member of Unitec’s English Online project team, he immediately embraced the online educational environment and has been active in online courseware and systems development since that date.  An interest in educational gaming environments led to Aaron developing a role playing game engine (Eduforge – RPG Storyteller) which he has recently adapted for the Open Educational Resources project.  From there the move to investigating MUVEs was a natural one and with his 3D graphics and programming skillset, an easy transition to make.
