Supporting Adult Literacy – an eLearning approach

Presenter: Greg Allen
Role:

Consultancy Services Manager

Organisation:

Workbase

Category:

Presentation

Description:

Workbase, in collaboration with TANZ (The Tertiary Accord of NZ), is developing an interactive, scenario based e-learning resource to build capability in the provision of adult literacy.  This session presents the resource and discusses its development. The project is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission’s eLearning Collaborative Development Fund (eCDF).  The target audiences for the project are tutors, programme managers and professional development providers.

The primary aims of the project are:
•  to provide a self-paced, online resource
•  to help tutors identify learner literacy needs
•  to help tutors integrate literacy teaching strategies in the delivery of training programmes

The resource uses a series of case studies to illustrate classroom situations and how literacy, numeracy and ESOL support can be provided to learners. Linked to the case studies are several learning modules enabling users to reflect on, and explore literacy, numeracy and ESOL issues in relation to their own teaching practice.
In particular the modules focus on:
•  how the learners’ prior knowledge and experience affects their learning
•  the literacy demands of tasks
•  identifying learners’ literacy learning needs
