Drawing upon my experience at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland, together with research evidence, the session will focus upon what are arguably still unquestioned assumptions in eLearning initiatives. The following assumptions will be discussed:
- Most learners take ICT influences for granted;
- Educators are required to look at more flexible methods of delivery;
- Students expect sophisticated flexible and distance learning solutions;
- eLearning research has contributed positively to educational theory;
- eLearning solutions have led to educational improvements;
- The Learning Management System has been a worthwhile investment;
- Tertiary Education establishments can keep pace with the rate of technological change.
The presentation will challenge the basic assumptions detailed above in order to generate discussion concerning the “real” state of eLearning in tertiary education. The audience will be encouraged to consider a model for eLearning development premised upon four basic developmental questions: what; why; who; and when.
