How can we help students to learn from each other online?

Description:

Many resources are available to help teachers to design online activities which support the social construction of understanding. Of those which could help teachers to facilitate online activities, most are theoretical. What are the most important features of successful online learning conversations? Can we derive a model which will help teachers to help students to have such conversations online?

Biography:

Jennie Swann is a Flexible Learning Advisor at the Auckland University of Technology. She has extensive experience in teaching, distance education and flexible learning in a variety of cultural environments, having worked in Asia, Africa, Europe and the South Pacific before coming to New Zealand. Her current role at AUT involves advising lecturers on the pedagogic elements of the online and flexible components of their courses. In the process of this work she has become increasingly aware that learning design is not enough. The role of facilitation of online learning is paramount.
