Introduction to Mahara: The MySpace for Education

This will be a hands on session with the innovative new ePortfolio system Mahara - the Open Source software developed as part of the eCDF ePortfolio Project.  The session will begin with a brief Introduction to the ePortfolio Project and how we are harnessing Mahara to meet the needs of life-long learners. It will include a description of the Artefacts/Views/Access Framework that differentiates Mahara from other ePortfolio systems.    It will cover navigating through the system and review key system features including searching and social networking features.  Attendees will create Artefacts (Profile Info, Resume, Blogs, and Files) in order to create a demonstration view.  You will also hear how you can become involved in the Mahara Community and the My Portfolio site.

Biography:

Mark Nichols is e-learning specialist with the Bible College of New Zealand, a broad role that includes such things as LMS administration, tutor training, course design, change management strategy and research. He is chair of the Mahara project (a TEC funded development for an open source ePortfolio platform), and a member of the DEANZ executive. Mark was recognised as a Flexible Learning Leader in New Zealand (2005-2006) and is also involved in the next stages of that initiative. Mark convened the ITPNZ (polytechnic sector) e-learning forum while working in that sector.    Meredith Henson is currently the Project Manager for the eCDF ePortfolio Project.  This is the third eCDF project she has participated in, previously working on the New Zealand Open Source Virtual Learning Environment I and II projects.
